A design registration provides protection of the appearance of a product. A number of conditions need to be fulfilled before design protection can be obtained. Amongst others the design needs to be new and have individual character. When you have a design right you are able to prevent others from copying your design.

A design registration can be either national, regional (i.e. EU) or international.

In the EU there is also the possibility of obtaining a design right solely by taking into use your design on the market. In this way you can achieve an unregistered right to your design for a limited period of time.
